As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Shelter House is working to increase public knowledge of domestic violence.

WHAT IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE?
Domestic violence is the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. It includes physical violence, sexual violence, financial abuse, threats, and/or emotional/psychological abuse.

TOP FIVE FACTS

  • 1-in-4 women and 1-in-7 men have been victims of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
  • 1-in-15 children are exposed to domestic violence each year, and 90% of these children are eyewitnesses to this violence.
  • The #1 reason domestic violence survivors stay or return to an abusive relationship is that they do not have the financial resources to break free.
  • On a typical day, there are more than 20,000 phone calls placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide.
  • Economic Impact: Nationwide, victims of domestic violence lose a total of 8 million days of paid work each year and the cost of domestic violence exceeds $8.3 billion per year.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Domestic violence is prevalent in every community, and affects all people regardless of age, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality. Physical violence is often accompanied by emotionally abusive and controlling behavior as part of a much larger, systematic pattern of dominance and control. Domestic violence can result in physical injury, psychological trauma, and even death. Domestic violence can be devastating to families, but the effects on our community runs even deeper.
